A work order is a written instruction from a client or main contractor to a contractor or sub-contractor to carry out specified work at agreed rates, within a stated time and on stated terms.
A work order usually names the scope of work, the rates or lump sum, the payment terms, the start and completion dates, the retention and the defect liability period. Once accepted, it is the document every later bill is checked against.
Small and mid-size firms often issue work orders to labour contractors, carpenters, electricians and plumbers for a defined part of a project. Without one, disputes about scope and rate are common at bill time.
A work order differs from a purchase order: a purchase order buys materials from a vendor, while a work order engages labour and workmanship.
ARC PEM’s contractor bill management records each contractor’s bills against the project, with payment approvals before money goes out, so every payment can be traced back to the agreed work. See all features.
